Supporters of Israel and people who like the idea of life, liberty and wholesomeness frequently call on the world at large and the US in particular to do what’s necessary to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Israelis in particular would prefer that a genocidal racist regime that declares Israel to be one of its main targets, not have nuclear weapons. Sanctions are in place on Iran, and they make things more difficult for Iran and its business partners, but years of these sanctions have not stopped the nuclear program in the past, and are not likely to cause Iran to stop working on its nuclear warheads now, just as it’s close to achieving its goal.
Current Predicament
For years Israel has called on the US to help prevent this catastrophe under the misguided idea that the US was an ally and wouldn’t want a nuclear holocaust in Israel. The Arab League and Islamic nations surrounding Iran are queasy at the idea of ayatollahs with nukes, and would enjoy seeing Iran struck out, but they know not to be hasty. After all, Iran is very close to being able to wipe Israel off the map, and Iran and the Arab League do have that desire in common, along with the obsession put an end to Western domination and to have Islamic rule across the world.
The Islamic disagreement is really over who will be the head of the cursed Islamic world caliphate. Maybe Saudi Arabia, head of the Arab League and controllers of Mecca and Medina calculate that when Iran uses the nuclear weapons it’s developing, it will use them on Israel first, and the two will be so embroiled in war that Iran won’t be able to attack Saudi Arabia or other Arab League nations.
Why Doesn’t Israel Just do it, Like with Iraq and Syria?
Israel unilaterally destroyed the Iraqi and Syrian reactors before those nations were near the point of making nuclear weapons. Why did Iran’s program go so far? Israel will receive more potential backlash for an attack on Iran than was likely for the attack on Iraq or Syria, daring as those operations were. Since 1993 the Israeli governments have been bound up with world opinion and US reactions, and have waited for US permission to defend Israel, and has several times defended US interests because they were US interests. This permission to defend itself won’t be forthcoming, especially in regard to Iran.
Why is Iran Protected?
Why is Iran protected by the West, and why does Iran have international protections that Iraq and Syria lack? Iran sells more oil than Iraq or Syria, and controls a major shipping lane, and has terrorist tendrils in South America, Europe, the US, Egypt, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Israel. Iran controls Lebanon, Syria and Gaza, and is fighting to take control of Yemen. Iran has hobbles on Iraq and has Europe by the short hairs. It has been spared because Russia is its close ally, and Western nations don’t want to face off with Russia, especially over Iran or Israel. Likewise China has strong connections with Iran, and Turkey has recently become a close ally of Iran. European nations, especially Germany, and some international corporations do a great deal of business with Iran and have financial reasons against strict sanctions or a military attack.
Iran signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, which gave it a nearly impenetrable bureaucratic shield during most of the years that Iran worked to violate the treaty. El Baradei, the Egyptian Muslim head of the IAEA while Iran was doing most of its nuclear development, helped cover for Iran. Muslims don’t rat out Muslims.
Iraq and Syria enjoyed none of these benefits.
Who Could Stop Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions?
Who has the power to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons? Israel does, the US does, Europe does; Russia, China, India and Pakistan and perhaps the UN could all put an end to Iranian nuclear ambitions. What is the likelihood that anybody outside of Israel would take the (probably military) steps necessary to stop Iran’s dream?
It goes without saying that Pakistan, Russia and China would not do anything against Iran. Pakistan is an ideological ally of Iran, Russia is a strategic and military ally who would gain nothing by cooperating in sanctions against Iran, much less a military strike. China is not much threatened by Iran, and Iran is useful to China as a supplier of oil and a fellow anti-western nation. China can use Iran alive, but not dead. India is closer to Israel than the others, but is not THAT close an ally, and is not directly threatened by Iran. It has no reason to be the one to risk itself to put Iran out of the running for nuclear weapons, especially since the attempt would probably fail and India would be attacked by Pakistan.
The US has shown that it is unlikely to make any serious move against Iran, especially now that Barack Obama is in office has bowed to Saudi Arabia both literally and figuratively. The US has threatened Israel against attacking Iran, with the apparent approval of the EU. Europe is an ideological wreck. It is being eaten alive by its weakness and fear of Islam on one hand, and on the other its dedication to the liberal and globalist ideals which have only survived in the artificial light of NATO and American strength.
Why Not Give Sanctions a Chance?
The US, UN and EU have been putting sanctions on Iran for years and they are ineffective for a couple of reasons. One, because several nations and international companies circumvent the sanctions for profit. These don’t particularly mind the genocidal and megalomaniac mindset of the Iranian government. Two, Iran’s government is obsessed with gaining nuclear weapons, and any damage done to its economy and population by sanctions is unlikely to be severe enough to cause it to stop developing the weapons. The Iranian regime has shown that if its population revolts, it doesn’t hesitate to put the revolt down by any means, no matter how brutal. It would certainly not hesitate to let its people suffer for the sake of finishing the nuclear program, and if they revolted the regime would simply kill and torture until the revolt died out.
Another Reason for US Inaction on Iran
Why else does Obama dally on Iran and threaten Israel incessantly, and why do the nations threatened by Iran do nothing about it? They would prefer not to attack Iran before it’s had a chance to do their dirty work for them, the work of destroying the Jewish State.
Scenario: Iran Strikes Israel with Nuclear Weapons First
The Western nations and the US State Department and executive branch do not feel for Israel as Iran threatens it, nor feel horrified at the idea of a nuclear holocaust against Israel. Indeed, in the current ideological/political climate of the west, if Israel were attacked by Iran, it would be a plus to the west. They would do eulogies afterwards and be glad that there was finally a solution to the Israel problem. If Iran attacked and crippled or destroyed Israel, the UN, EU, NATO, US and maybe even Russia could feign righteous indignation and be united in attacking and neutralizing Iran, with the backing of the Arab League. Iran couldn’t withstand a determined international attack. What a plus for those nations with both Israel and Iran out of the way!
On the other hand, an Israeli preemptive strike on Iran would be more of a problem to the West. This is why the urging is not for Israel to strike Iran, but to refrain from striking Iran. Meanwhile, Iran continually goads Israel to attack it, with its threats. Iran calculates that Israel would not be successful, and that if it tried either Iran would destroy Israel and gain power from it, or other nations would attack Israel and clear the way for Iran. Iran is trying to put Israel into checkmate.
Indeed, even in the best scenario, if Israel were successful in an attack on Iran and destroyed all its nuclear sites and hopefully brought about the end of the Iranian Mullahs, the West would be in an bad situation because the Arab nations would quickly use the happy news of Iran’s demise as an excuse to demand Israel’s demise. Arab nations have not had good experiences with attacking Israel, but they’ve had great success in manipulating western nations and the UN do their will.
The West, Instead of being able to maintain a pseudo-civil front while enabling the Arab League, Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood to destroy Israel, would be pressured to help do the deed directly, with their own armies and blood. Israel would have done the Arab League a great favor in attacking Iranian nuclear facilities, and would probably have suffered some serious damage in return. The Arab League would not suddenly forget the Islamic goal of complete domination in the world and especially the Middle East, nor the usefulness of keeping their people united against Israel in order to prevent revolutions against themselves.
If the West sanctioned and boycotted Israel, but did not join in the attack, Islamic forces would likely launch terrorist attacks and an embargo similar to that imposed by the Arab League during and after the Yom Kippur war in 1973. If the western nations did participate in attacking Israel, the cost would be very heavy in casualties, and the US especially would face serious civil unrest and financial difficulties from the war. At the same time, even if the US obeyed the Islamic nations, the West would still be a target of Islamic jihad, as it showed itself to be weak and pliable, and ripe for the taking. The Arab League and the Islamic world is not the friend of the western nations, no matter how much they may benefit from the West.
This desire to see the end of Israel which is secretly and not so secretly a driving force in global Mideast policy, is also a strong motivation for not more fully backing the revolutionary movement in Iran. The ayatollahs are fullfilling Western and Arab League wishes in regard to Israel, and are considered despicable characters in the West. The calculation is that Iran’s destruction can wait until after they’ve been useful. If a revolutionary government overthrew the ayatollahs in Iran, it would be a strongly nationalistic government, enjoy more world support, and would likely continue the nuclear program, but without the threats to Israel. The ayatollahs’ genocidal intentions are more useful to the west than a more sane government would be.
The only nation who has a strong stake in destroying the Iranian nuclear program and if necessary, Iran itself, before Iran can strike Israel, is Israel. Iran’s aims are plain and not open to misinterpretation. Iran currently works to destabilize Western nations and to control weak Islamic nations with all the means at its disposal. Iran’s goal is not to get nuclear weapons as a status symbol, so it can join the “nuclear club”. The goal of Iran is obtain more military and political power in order to have a world caliphate with its seat in Iran. Destroying Israel is only a step along the way, and Israel is the only nation likely to try to prevent that next step.
